A STRONG PLAN FOR HARGREAVES MALL AND BENDIGO CBD
LIBERAL PARTY CANDIDATE FOR BENDIGO

Bendigo residents will benefit from a re-elected Turnbull Liberal Team who today launched a plan for a stronger and safer Hargreaves Mall.
Liberal candidate for Bendigo, Megan Purcell, was joined by Senator the Hon Mitch Fifield to announce the first step of this plan, that a re-elected Turnbull Liberal Government will provide $245,000 to the Bendigo City Council to install CCTV cameras in Hargreaves Mall through the Safer Communities Fund.
“The installation of CCTV cameras in Hargreaves Mall through the Turnbull Liberal Team’s Safer Communities Fund will improve the safety and amenity of this area for locals,” Ms Purcell said.
“I have spoken with many local residents and traders who don’t feel safer in this area anymore because of thugs and bullies who think they own our community space.”
"Installing CCTV cameras here will ensure this Mall is safer for families and business owners and will cut down on vandalism and anti-social behaviour. They are an important deterrent to criminals and will help assist police catch criminals,” Ms Purcell said.
“This is part of my plan for a stronger and safer Hargreaves Mall and Bendigo’s CBD. Hargreaves Mall and our CBD should be a vibrant and exciting space, available to the whole community; currently it is underutilised and I have a plan to improve it.”
“Part of the plan is to work with traders to encourage events and a creative use of the space, bringing the Mall to life throughout both the day and night and encourage growth and opportunities for the area.”
Senator Mitch Fifield said the Turnbull Liberal Team’s Safer Communities Fund delivers on the ongoing commitment to keep Australians safe and secure.
“Only safe communities can be strong and prosperous, and the best way to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour is to prevent it happening,” Senator Fifield said.
“I commend Megan Purcell on her work fighting for this CCTV funding. Local residents will benefit from a safer Hargreaves Mall and CBD and by building a safer community we are also building a stronger community,” Senator Fifield said.
Minister for Justice Michael Keenan said the Turnbull Liberal Government’s community safety record was solid.
“The Turnbull Liberal Government has now committed more than $100 million purely to assist local communities in delivering strategies to address crime and anti-social behaviour,” Mr Keenan said.
“We will continue to put funds towards projects that make our streets, communities and our nation safer,” Mr Keenan said.
