ACCC report highlights strong growth in NBN connections

4 November 2016

The Turnbull Government welcomes the release of the ACCC’s third Wholesale Market Indicators Report which shows strong demand for fast broadband services delivered over the National Broadband Network.

The report confirms that wholesale broadband services, sold on to consumers by internet service providers, grew 22 per cent from the last quarter (1,388,665 million services as at the end of September).

The fastest growing connection types were fibre to the basement (commonly used to connect high-density developments) which grew by 79 per cent and fibre to the node which grew by a 142.5 per cent.

The report also highlights that the purchase of capacity (known as connectivity virtual circuits or CVC) by wholesalers grew 25 per cent from the last quarter, pointing to a small increase in average capacity per service.

As data usage continues to increase over the network, nbn expects CVC unit pricing to continue to fall.

Other results in the report include:

·       The dominant download speed tier of all services is 25 Megabits per second (rising from 52 per cent to 54 per cent of all services).

·       Regional areas represented the largest increase in services, with a 25 per cent increase.

·       Interim satellite services have declined by 30.2 per cent from the last quarter as consumers move to the nbn’s new Sky Muster satellites.

The ACCC data helps provide transparency for current and future participants and allows close monitoring of nbn-related market trends.

The report is available on the ACCC’s website.
