Senator Mitch Fifield acknowledges Australia’s Carers
Shadow Minister for Disabilities, Carers and the Voluntary Sector, Senator Mitch Fifield, today welcomed the start of Carers Week 2010 and thanked carers across Australia for the valuable contribution they make to the lives of the individuals they support.
Carers Week 2010 is being held between Sunday 17th and Saturday 23rd October.
“It was an honour to attend the launch of Carers Week this morning on behalf of the Coalition, and to acknowledge the invaluable contribution carers make to Australia and our community.”
“Without the dedication of the many unpaid carers who provide support to family and friends who are frail, or have a disability, illness or chronic condition, many Australians would not be able to continue living at home or participating in their community,” Senator Fifield said today.
There are approximately 2.9 million unpaid carers in Australia who give their time and energy, often 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to provide care, love and support to family and friends.
“Carers Week provides an important opportunity to raise awareness and to promote the valuable role Australian carers play in our society and acknowledge the time and support they give to others,” Senator Fifield said.
The 2010 Carers Week theme, “Anyone, Anytime can become a carer,” reflects the indiscriminate nature of the caring role, as many Australians find themselves in the role of carer unexpectedly.
In addition to Carers Week, Carers Day 2010 is being held on Tuesday 19th October.
Carers Day is a day to celebrate the contribution carers make in their community and show appreciation through a simple act of kindness by doing something for a carer you know.
“I encourage all Australians who know a carer to make the effort on Carers Day to spend some time with their friend, neighbour or colleague to show appreciation for the vital contribution they make to our community.”
“Carers Week and Carers Day are an opportunity for us all to thank, recognise and show our appreciation and support to the many Australians, young and old, who often make personal sacrifices to care for a family member or friend,” Senator Fifield said.
