GOVERNMENT STUFFS UP IN THE SENATE
The Government tonight failed in a last-minute attempt to patch up their mismanaged legislative program.
“A lack of procedural knowledge has seen the Government fail in their attempt to extend the sitting hours of the Senate,” Manager of Opposition Business Senator Mitch Fifield said.
“The Government had the numbers with the support of the Greens and the Independent Senators, giving them a majority, but still bungled their attempt.”
The motion to extend sitting hours, at the request of the Greens, lapsed as time for debate expired and Government Senators failed to remain in the Chamber to ensure the Senate was quorate.
“Ironically, the Greens proposed the extension of sitting hours on ‘Go Home On Time Day,’ a day which Greens Senators have been encouraging Australians to observe with great gusto,” Senator Fifield said.
“It is the Government’s responsibility to manage their legislative agenda within the Senate program.”
“The Government’s first step should be to provide the Parliament with full information on the NBN to enable a proper debate.”
The Opposition will ensure proper scrutiny in the days ahead.
