GOING FOR GOLD
Senator Mitch Fifield today welcomed the start of the 2012 Paralympic Games which will be held from Wednesday 29 August to Sunday 9 September in London.
“In June, I was delighted to meet our athletes at the announcement of the Australian Paralympic Team. The room was abuzz with excitement at representing Australia on the world stage,” Senator Fifield said.
“Our Paralympians are great representatives of our nation. Their dedication and sportsmanship will be on display again for the world to see.”
London will welcome over 4,000 of the world’s best paralympic athletes from 165 countries for 11 days of elite competition.
This is the first time in the history of the Paralympic Games that tickets have sold out, with a further 70,000 released due to popular demand.
“The London Paralympic Games will be extremely competitive and I have no doubt that our Paralympic Team will again make Australia proud,” Senator Fifield said.
“Our Paralympians are world leaders in their sports. I wish our athletes the best of luck in their pursuits and look forward to watching them inspire a nation.”
“Whether through social media, television or at the Games, I encourage Australians at home and overseas to follow their success and cheer on our athletes in the true Aussie spirit,” Senator Fifield said.
