The Australian Ballet School today opened Marilyn Rowe House, a new student residence in Melbourne that will house Australia’s next generation of world class classical dancers.
Speaking at the opening, Minister for the Arts Mitch Fifield welcomed this new chapter in the life of the school, which will assist many young dancers from regional and remote locations attend Australia’s most prestigious ballet school.
“This is the first time the Australian Ballet School has been able to offer its own residential accommodation for enrolled students,” Minister Fifield said.
“This new residence will provide a home away from home for young dancers and bolster the international reputation of the School as one of the world’s leading classical dance training institutions.”
Graduates of the Australian Ballet School are highly regarded for their skill and the quality of their training and are in demand to join both the Australian Ballet and the world’s best ballet companies.
The Australian Government is proud to provide ongoing support for the Australian Ballet School as one of Australia’s elite performing arts training institutions and contributed a one-off grant of $1 million to support the purchase of the new residence, which was used by the School to generate more than $7 million in private sector support for the project.
