SENATOR THE HON MICHAELIA CASH
Minister for Employment Minister for Women Senator for Western Australia
28 April 2016
The Turnbull Government today launched a new website which empowers women to take control online and protect themselves from technology-facilitated abuse.
Minister for Women Michaelia Cash and Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield said the site, www.eSafety.gov.au/Women, was funded under the $100 million Women’s Safety Package and developed by the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner.
“Technology-facilitated abuse is a growing problem faced by victims of domestic violence,” Minister Cash said.
“The Government is committed to implementing practical solutions to protect and educate those at risk of experiencing such abuse.”
Minister for Communications Mitch Fifield said the Turnbull Government is committed to providing a safety net for women and children at high risk of experiencing violence, and this new website will help empower women to protect themselves online.
“The eSafetyWomen site provides a range of resources to help women manage technological risks by giving them the tools they need to be confident online,” Minister Fifield said.
The website offers practical advice on how to check security settings across all digital devices, including smartphones and tablets, wearables and internet-connected health devices. The site also provides tips on how to deal with
serious online abuse such as cyber stalking, trolling, and sharing intimate images without consent, often referred to as ‘revenge porn’.
The Government’s $100 million Women’s Safety package will improve frontline support and services, leverage innovative technologies to keep women safe, and provide education resources to help change community attitudes to violence and abuse.
