The Turnbull Government welcomes the release of the National Opera Review Final Report, which explores how Australian audiences can continue to have access to opera performances of the highest artistic standard.
The review has examined the artistic vibrancy, engagement with audiences and financial positions of the four major opera companies: Opera Australia, Opera Queensland, State Opera of South Australia, and West Australian Opera.
The report is the most comprehensive review of opera undertaken in Australia. It highlights the significant role that the major opera companies play in Australia’s cultural life and the complex challenges these companies face.
The report has proposed 118 recommendations designed to promote a dynamic future for opera in Australia.
The Government will give careful consideration to the recommendations before providing a response.
The review was undertaken by an independent, expert panel chaired by Dr Helen Nugent AO, with Mr Moffatt Oxenbould AM, Mr Andrew McKinnon and Ms Kathryn Fagg. I extend my thanks for the significant time, energy and dedication they have devoted to this task.
