New performance to commemorate Australia’s war time history
6 May 2018
The Turnbull Government has announced more than $420,000 for the Queensland Performing Arts Centre to deliver Armistice, a new theatrical performance reflecting on Australia’s war time history, in November 2018.
Supported through the Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund, the performance will combine song, music, dance and archival footage to celebrate a century of service since the Armistice that ended World War I.
Minister for the Arts, Senator Mitch Fifield, said the Australian Government is proud to support the performance, which will provide an important opportunity to reflect on the last 100 years of Australia’s war history.
‘The performance will explore ideas of sacrifice and achievement and how these wartime experiences have helped to form Australia’s contemporary, national identity.’
‘The event will also include archival materials and research insights from the Australian War Memorial and the National Film and Sound Archives, helping to bring our history to life for new audiences.’
Member for Brisbane, Mr Trevor Evans MP said: ‘The Government is proud to support this family friendly event which will give the Brisbane community the chance to celebrate the efforts, sacrifices and achievements of service men and women from World War I to today.’
The Chief Executive of Queensland Performing Arts Centre, John Kotzas said: ‘With the desire to enrich lives and help create connected communities, our organisation is committed to providing opportunities for Queensland artists to develop theatrical works that tell the meaningful and significant stories of our rich culture and history. We are honoured that the Australian Government is further supporting this commitment and enabling the creation of Armistice, a nationally significant performance event, in Queensland.’
Over the last four years, the Australian Government’s Anzac Centenary Arts and Culture Fund has supported the development, production and performance of 78 arts and culture projects focused on enhancing Australia’s understanding of the Anzac legacy.
These projects interpret the Anzac story as part of the Anzac Centenary national program being held from 2014 to 2018 to commemorate the centenary of the First World War and a Century of Service by Australia’s servicemen and women.
