The Turnbull Government has announced $22.4 million (incl GST) to fund 91 organisations through the 2018-19 Indigenous Visual Arts Industry Support (IVAIS) program round. This funding is for the operational costs of around 80 Indigenous-owned art centres and art fairs, regional hubs and service organisations across Australia.
Minister for the Arts, Senator Mitch Fifield said that strong participation by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people is the key to the program’s success.
“The art centres, fairs, hubs and service organisations supported through the IVAIS program are at the heart of Australia’s internationally renowned Indigenous visual arts movement,” said Minister Fifield.
“The program enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists to create new work, connect with the commercial art market, enhance their skills and share their cultures with future generations.”
Two new organisations are included in the 2018-19 funding round:
· Mutitjulu Community Aboriginal Corporation in the Northern Territory, to provide services to visual artists through Walkatjara Art.
· Badimia Land Aboriginal Corporation in Western Australia, to provide visual arts services to artists based on Badimia and Wadjarri country.
Six new Indigenous arts worker positions, including at Iltja Ntjarra Aboriginal Corporation in Alice Springs, Northern Territory and Girringun Arts in Cardwell, Queensland will be funded through the round.
The IVAIS program supports the employment of more than 300 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts workers in Indigenous-owned art centres around Australia and enables more than 7,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders to generate income and engage with the nation’s economy.
