The Turnbull Government has today welcomed NBN Co Limited’s (nbn) activation of four million premises on the National Broadband Network (NBN) as it speeds towards completion in 2020.
Minister for Communications, Senator Mitch Fifield said the NBN rollout is on the home stretch and is making strong progress with over 6.8 million premises now able to order a service across Australia.
“This milestone reflects the speed of the rollout. More than 100,000 homes and businesses are being connected each month and we are well on our way to completing the network build in the next two years,” Minister Fifield said.
“The achievements to date demonstrate the Government’s commitment to connecting all Australians to fast and reliable broadband sooner to enjoy the benefits of a world class broadband network.”
The Government’s NBN is making broadband more affordable for all Australians and giving greater choice of provider. The rollout is also providing thousands of jobs for Australians, with a direct workforce of over 6,000 and an external workforce of 24,000.
Internet access has dramatically improved in regional Australia with close to 60 per cent of the four million NBN connections being delivered in non-metropolitan areas.
At present, around 94 per cent of all homes and businesses outside major urban areas can either order NBN-based services or have new network construction underway.
