GOVERNMENT SHOULD RELEASE
REPORT INTO DISABILITY CARE AND SUPPORT
The Opposition calls on the Government to immediately release the Productivity Commission’s Final Report into Disability Care and Support and to put it on the agenda of the next COAG meeting. The final report was delivered to the Government on 31 July 2011.
This Government has a history of sitting on significant reports for long periods of time. This report into disability care and support is too important to sit on.
Given the significance of the Commission’s report, it is appropriate that Australians with disability and state and territory governments – who will be crucial to any new national arrangement – have the opportunity to look at this report in detail at the same time as the Federal Government.
The current system of support for people with disability is broken. The Coalition recognises that people with disability, their carers and families deserve a better deal and has strongly supported the work of the Productivity Commission.
Providing better support for people with disability should be core government business. The Government must put reform of disability support on the COAG agenda for its next meeting on 19 August 2011.
