The Australian Government welcomes the announcement of the appointment of Mr Adrian Collette AM as the incoming Chief Executive Officer of the Australia Council for the Arts.
Mr Collette is highly regarded in the Australian arts sector, having worked in various arts leadership roles over three decades. His previous positions include Chief Executive of Opera Australia, one of the country’s largest performing arts companies, and Managing Director of Reed Books Australia. He has held the position of Vice-Principal (Engagement) at the University of Melbourne since early 2014, a role that includes oversight of the University’s museums and galleries, and its many arts sector partnerships.
Mr Collette’s experience as a member of the Australia Council Board since 1 July 2013 and Chair of the Australia Council’s Major Performing Arts Panel will be invaluable in his new role.
He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2008 for service to the performing arts, particularly through executive roles with Opera Australia, as a mentor to young artists, to publishing and to the community.
The Government acknowledges the significant service of current CEO Mr Tony Grybowski, whose term concludes on 23 October 2018. Over the past five years as one of Australia’s chief arts administrators and cultural leaders Mr Grybowski has overseen major reforms such as the introduction of the new Australia Council Act 2013 and inaugural strategic plan, a new peer assessment model and a heightened focus on Indigenous arts and artists with disabilities.
Mr Collette’s commencement date will be announced in the coming weeks.
